A plea from Cairo: “See how they killed my people”

This powerpoint was created by one of the Darfuri refugees I interviewed in Cairo. He asked me to post it on my site so more people could see it.

He lives in a one-bedroom apartment in a poor area with twelve family members, and does menial labor for 15 hours a day for the equivalent of $2. One of his children has a disability and there is no way he can afford the support she needs.

I have not edited his presentation – it is as he sent it to me other than the request to cover his brother’s face.

There is so little I can do to help any of the Darfuri community I spoke with there. UNHCR has said their case files are closed because they have been given refugee status. But they don’t have permanent status, which makes it almost impossible for them to get work, plus they severe face discrimination, and they don’t feel safe.

Not much of a “refuge” . . .

*If anyone reading this has suggestions for how to help – ideally how this family could be re-settled in a third country –  please post it in the Comments. I know the situation is tough for all of the Sudanese refugees in Cairo, and that I am just highlighting this one person because I happened to spend 5 hours with his family. I also know that AMERA and others are making valiant efforts to support refugees in Cairo. Moreover, this family is considered “lucky” relative to those stranded in the camps in Chad. But that doesn’t make their situation objectively acceptable. ]
