Taking care of survivors

Survivors of genocide are people who we all, as part of a common human race, have some moral responsibility towards, as well as some recompense to pay for not having done whatever was necessary to stop the  destruction of their families and communities. To me, taking care of the survivors of past genocides is also an integral part of preventing further cycles of violence, indeed even genocide, again in the future. So when Gaston wrote about his involvement in a project caring for survivors of the 1994 Rwanda genocide, I suggested he send through some info for us. Here it is:

“Rwanda has many orphaned children survivors of genocide who don’t have somewhere to live. Most of them are accommodated at their school with other children (who have parents and houses), and during the holidays those orphans stay at school because they do not have anywhere to go.

Today the government want to build houses for them but does not have enough funds for that. So then, the objective of this project is to mobilize Rwandans inside the country, Rwandan Diaspora community members living in all corners of the globe as well as their friends all over the world to support vulnerable Genocide Survivors especially the youth.

This project – the One Dollar campaign – has been implemented on 07th April 2009 and it will last 100 days of national mourning.”
