SUMMARY:<!--:en-->Darfur Abandoned<!--:-->
DESCRIPTION: The conflict that erupted in Sudan's Darfur region a decade ago was at first largely ignored. Then it was the subject of intense media coverage and an unprecedented campaign of grassroots citizen activism. Then it was ignored again. The only constant? The suffering of the people of Darfur. Please join us and a panel of distinguished journalists for a discussion of media coverage of Darfur over the past 10 years, how citizen activists and governments in Khartoum and Washington influenced reporting, and lessons to be learned. Introductory remarks: Ambassador Dane F. Smith, former U.S. Senior Advisor on Darfur Moderated by: Jon Sawyer, Executive Director of the Pulitzer Center on Crisis Reporting Panel: James Copnall, Rebecca Hamilton, Isma’il Kushkush, and Emily Wax Reception will follow the panel. Seating is limited. RSVP by March 18 to rsvp@pulitzercenter.org

SUMMARY:<!--:en-->Carnegie New Leaders (New York)<!--:-->
DESCRIPTION: Hosted by: Carnegie Council for Ethics in International Affairs "Beyond Good Intentions: The promise and peril of citizen engagement in foreign policy" Starting in 2005, thousands of ordinary Americans made the plight of people in Darfur their cause and tried to build political will within the foreign policy system to respond to Darfur. Believing the story they had been told that U.S. failure in Rwanda could have been changed by the outcry of an engaged American populace, they imagined that their outcry marked the dividing line between life and death for Darfuris. The mass movement advocacy model tested out on Darfur had some clear victories that leaders in other issue areas might wish to emulate. But their advocacy also set up some perverse consequences that should be thought through before embarking on the mass movement approach. Rebecca Hamilton, a reporter who has written extensively on Darfur and the author of Fighting for Darfur: Public Action and the Struggle to Stop Genocide, will share her thoughts and experiences. Rachel Davis will moderate the discussion.
