Palgrave Macmillan to publish The Promise of Engagement

Hi everyone

With thanks to Robert at Sterling Lord Literistic, I have just accepted with Palgrave Macmillan* for world-wide English rights. In their words they are “a cross-market publisher specializing in cutting edge academic and trade non-fiction titles. Our list consists of top authors ranging from academics making original contributions in their disciplines to trade authors, including journalists and experts, writing news-making books for a broad, educated readership.”

The appeal for me is that they are comfortable with a book that is going to fall into something of a gray area between academic and general markets. My goal is to have a final product that is researched and referenced in a way that I would be comfortable with in an academic setting, but with a narrative that is basically journalistic in style (i.e. I want “real people” to enjoy reading it).

The messages I’ve been getting from the woman who will be my editor there make me feel like she gets the point of the book: “What I really like about it is that it picks up where many books on American responses to faraway wars end – enjoining the reader to become politically engaged-to protest, march, sign petitions, campaign for divestment-and asks what the ultimate efficacy and effect of these efforts were . . .”

I still don’t have a title locked in, so if any of you have suggestions, I’m keen to hear them.

Best,

Bec
