A picture worth a thousand words

Walking up the stairs to the office of the Acting Head of the AU’s Conflict Management Centre you come across multiple, almost life-size photographs, of AMIS officers proudly standing to attention in El Fasher.

It’s a poignant reminder that the AMIS deployment was a determined effort by the newly formed AU to give life to Art. 4(h) of its Constitutive Act: “The right of the Union to intervene in a Member State pursuant to a decision of the Assembly in respect of grave circumstances, namely war crimes, genocide and crimes against humanity.”

I fear the experience of Darfur may lead them to be wary of repeating these efforts in the future.
