Mahmood Mamdani on Save Darfur

I just read this interview with Mahmood Mamdani in the Boston Globe.

By providing quotes such as: “Most [of Save Darfur] have no idea of the difference between the two situations [Darfur and South Sudan]” – Mamdani strikes me as trying to court controversy. Who are the “most” he refers to?  The Darfur Peace and Development Organization?  The Masaleit exile community coalition? or Amnesty International?  – – These being just a few of the organizations that are part of the Save Darfur coalition.

I’m far from uncritical of Save Darfur, but surely some of the coalition members should be given some benefit of the doubt regarding their capacity to distinguish two different situations.  . . ? Though maybe it is me that needs to give Mamdani the benefit of the doubt – other parts of the Globe interview sound reasonable and one’s position should hardly be judged on the basis of one interview alone. Perhaps he does have an empirical basis for this claim about “most” of Save Darfur. I am currently reading his book, Saviors & Survivors, to find out. Will post again once I have finished it.
